A study has urged smokers to quit smoking this New Year after new analyses revealed the number of minutes smokers lose with each cigarette they smoke.

According to expert estimates, men lose 17 minutes of their lives with every cigarette they smoke, while women lose 22 minutes of their lives with every cigarette they smoke, according to the British PA Media agency.

These figures are higher than previous estimates, which indicated that each cigarette shortens a smoker's life by 11 minutes.

The new estimates are based on updated figures from long-term population health studies, which indicate that each cigarette results in an average loss of 20 minutes of life for both sexes.

Researchers from University College London noted that the damage caused by smoking is "cumulative," and the earlier a person quits smoking and avoids more cigarettes, the longer their lifespan will be.

According to the new analysis, commissioned by the UK Department of Health and Social Care, if a smoker who smokes 10 cigarettes a day quits on January 1, by the eighth day of the same month, they could "avoid losing an entire day of their life."
